As a senior public relations major I am preparing to enter the working world, and am less than enthusiastic about the current job market. While there are plenty of jobs out there they are harder to secure and recent grads are now competing with professionals with five plus years of experience. Thus every networking opportunity is crucial to take part in, but unfortunately everyone knows that.
Yesterday I attended the fall career fair and had the pleasure of standing in long lines with hundreds of other people to speak with representatives from companies that are minimally related to public relations. While I know it provided me the opportunity to develop my professional skills I couldn’t help but be overwhelmed and discouraged by the task ahead of me. Securing a full-time position before May 15, 2010 is the goal of every graduating communications major at Penn State, and it is one that I am determined to achieve. You know what they say, ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again,’ and if that doesn’t work, there’s always grad school!
