Do you like hockey, because I do! I was extremely excited to hear that Penn State Men’s and Women’s Hockey teams will be going Division 1. Happy Valley hockey fans can thank Terry and Kim Pegula after the couple donated $88 million — the largest private gift in Penn State history — to finance a new multipurpose arena which will seat 8, 000 people. It will be built near the Bryce Jordan Center and should be completed around 2014. The team will go D1 in the 2012-2013 sports year. This could also lead to the possible formation of a Big Ten Hockey Conference beginning in 2012.
Penn State Athletic Director, Tim Curley said “this is the fulfillment of a dream for many that have been longtime advocates and supporters of Penn State hockey.”
Even more exciting is that I was at my internship at Beaver Stadium when this announcement was made; it was really thrilling to see everyone’s reaction to the news. Being a PR major and wanting to work in sports, it was very cool to actually see this happen right in front of me and be a part of something so special.
