I decided to major in public relations during the fall semester of my junior year… A late bloomer, I know! I came to Penn State undecided on my major, and spent my freshman year taking a variety of classes in an effort to figure out what I wanted to do. Always interested in health, I declared a nutrition major during the spring semester of my sophomore year, and stuck with it through the fall. When organic chemistry became too much too handle and I started to get into the nitty-gritty of nutrition, I realized that being a nutritionist wasn’t something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
From the beginning, my mother kept telling me that I should do something with writing. “You have a natural ability!” she’d say. No matter what she said, however, I refused to listen—she was my mother, after all; what did she know? But, as it always seems to turn out, she was right. I’ve enjoyed writing for as long as I can remember, so a major like public relations seemed like something worth trying.
With a year under my belt, now I know that I’ve definitely made the right choice. I love my classes, I get to play on my strengths, and my involvement with student organizations like PRSSA and Happy Valley Communications has shown me how much this diverse field has to offer. As sad as I may be to graduate from Penn State in May, knowing that I will be working in an industry that I love will make the transition an exciting one!
