As a freshman, I have pretty limited experience with public relations. I am pretty certain that this is where I want to be as far as my major, but I do not have much experience as far as what is actually involved in PR. You cannot take the PR classes at Penn State until around sophomore year, so I wasn’t sure how to learn more. This semester, I decided I wanted to change this by getting involved.
After some searching I found PRSSA and Valley Magazine’s business division. Both of these organizations are exactly what I was looking for. I have been involved in these organizations for about a month now, and I have already learned so much. The idea behind them is to give us hands-on experience with public relations. Of course there are committee leaders who help to guide us in the right direction, but for the most part we are left to our devices to promote different events.
I feel more comfortable each week with the PR world and I am looking forward to becoming more certain of what I am doing. By the time I am able to take some PR classes next semester, I will be ahead of the game.
I would recommend anyone who is considering PR to find some organizations, such as Valley and definitely PRSSA. From the experiences I have already gained, I feel ahead of the game in my education.
