In the ever-changing landscape of public relations, it is always a necessity to remain up-to-date on all the latest news and trends in the industry. The information we learn in class is important, but being able to produce an opinion and speak intelligently about what is currently going on in the world, in addition to other technical skills, may be the one thing that sets you apart from others in the job application process.
I learned this summer that it is imperative to know what is happening in our industry at all times. I had the opportunity to assist in the development of a new social media strategy for a major off-price retailer, but it required me to research the current strategies of other successful companies, the trends in the communications industry as a whole and where the wave of technology were moving.
Now, at the end of this summer, I look back and reflect on how much I have learned. Not only did I learn about social media and marketing on a corporate level, but also more than 50 percent of the conversations my boss and I had revolved around what was happening in the marketing world that very day.
As we move into the new fall semester, I hope to continue to stay up to date on all the latest
news. Below are just a few news sources I recommend adding to your daily news intake:
Mashable.com: Over the years, Mashable has been considered to have one of the most engaged online news communities. The site reports on the importance of digital innovation and how it empowers and inspires people around the world. My favorite part: the infographics, which allow users to read an article in a graphic format.
PRnewsonline.com: PR News not only has the latest in PR news, they also post jobs, host webinars and promote events happening in the industry. My favorite part: PRNews has such a robust social media presence producing great content everyday.
PR Daily: Ragan’s PR Daily is absolutely fascinating. Readers will find everything from
essential writing advice to client relations and the freshest news. My favorite part: the scrolling hero of news and articles on the homepage serves as a great starting point.
So whether you’re researching for a class project or just looking to learn more about the
industry, these three sites have it all. Staying informed on a daily basis will only make you more marketable when entering the job world and being successful in your career. Happy reading!
