Internship Story: PR at the Santander Arena

By Sean Donnelly, Communications Committee

Last Spring, I had the honor of being a PR/marketing intern for the Santander Arena, formerly known as the Sovereign Center, in Reading, Pa. The Santander Arena is a multi-purpose arena that hosts various concerts throughout the year and is also home of the Reading Royals, a minor league affiliate of the Washington Capitals.

A typical day during my internship consisted of assisting the marketing manager in media planning and promotion. Everyday tasks also included creating marketing brochures and collateral material for the venue. The most enjoyable and exciting aspect, however, were the days of events. Here are some of my favorite moments from my internship this Summer:

One of the most memorable events I worked was the Dierks Bentley and Miranda Lambert concert, where I assisted with the meet and greet of the two country stars. I didn’t really have a chance to meet Miranda Lambert, but I did have time to talk to Dierks Bentley. He was one of the nicest people I have had the pleasure of meeting. He was so kind to everyone involved with the process. I was able to enjoy the rest of the show for free with some friends who bought tickets.

Another amazing experience was when the Tedeschi Trucks Band came to town. When I was assisting the photographer in the front row, it took everything I had to keep it professional and not start rocking out. Derek Trucks, who was ranked by Rolling Stone as the 16th greatest guitarist of all time, noticed me watching him in awe and in the middle of his guitar solo, gave me a head bow. As a big music fan, this was a surreal moment that I won’t soon forget.

One of my last great moments at my internship was when I spent an entire day driving around with a Harlem Globetrotter named Wun “The Shot” Verser. We spent the day promoting the event at a radio station, an elementary school, and the Reading Hospital. One of the best moments was when we took Wun into a patient’s room who was a big fan of the Globetrotters. The look on her face when he walked in was absolutely priceless.

I was treated so kindly by everyone at the Santander Arena and it was an amazing internship experience. How many other internships allow you to meet so many stars? I learned so much from everyone around me and had a fantastic time.
