A PRSSA Yearly Wrap-Up

Hello PRSSA! I hope everyone is enjoying the start of summer break and spending time with family and friends. For those of you who don’t know, my name is Rachel Gluck and I am so honored to be the Vice President for the upcoming 2014-2015 academic school year.

As summer begins I want to take some time to reflect on how wonderful this past year has been. PRSSA worked diligently to provide our members with great opportunities to form friendships as well as improve their skills.

This year our four committees, which include Fundraising, Event Planning, Communications and THON/Philanthropy, all worked extremely hard. Our committee chairs and members really stepped up to the plate and not only challenged themselves but each other. This hard work resulted in great success.

Some of our most successful events included A Young Professional’s Guide to Success, featuring Jay Paterno, as well as a Winter Fashion Show. These events were fun and worthwhile for our members and the Penn State community.

Our Fundraising Committee spent a great deal of time organizing hot chocolate sales and partnering with various businesses in the community such as Five Guys and 2000 Degrees. Members also had a great opportunity to improve their writing skills and creative thinking by providing content for our blog. Throughout the year, our website was filled with interesting posts on the industry, culture and Penn State. The blog really grew in variety of posts for all audiences to enjoy.

Our THON/Philanthropy committee not only raised over $26,000 for THON, but really worked on improving their relationships with our THON families, the Whitehead’s and the Scott’s. Our members were dedicated and motivated to take leadership roles in fundraising efforts and create a special bond within the committee and our families.

Throughout the year, we had various workshops such as PRSSA 101, which allowed new and old members to learn what PRSSA can offer them. We also hosted the Redefine Your Online Brand workshop to help our members understand the importance of their online brand through social media and portfolios.

We also welcomed various PR professionals to Penn State, who graciously offered to speak at our general meetings about their experiences, offer advice and more. Some of these experts included Julie Plake, Kristin DeRosa and Tom Forsythe.

We have already begun working on new ways to improve PRSSA and I am so excited to see what next year will bring. I hope everyone enjoys the summer sun!
