Connecting with other PRSSA students leads to a dream summer internship

In third grade, my family took a trip to Disneyland in Anaheim, California for a few days. From the first time I walked out of LAX and saw the sun shining through the palm trees, I knew California was where I was meant to be. Thanks to Penn State’s College of Communications and my involvement through PRSSA, I was recently blessed with the opportunity to chase my California dreams and move to Los Angeles for the summer to intern at an entertainment public relations firm on the outskirts of Beverly Hills.

To say I am grateful for this opportunity is an understatement. If I did not join PRSSA, I would not have met Caroline Nelson, a recent Penn State graduate and former PRSSA Thon chair. While walking around Medlar Field at Penn State’s Relay for Life, I bumped into Caroline. We chatted for a little bit about how I wanted to move to Los Angeles for the summer and how I was currently on the hunt for an entertainment public relations internship.

Without hesitation, Caroline went into detail about her summer experience with a firm called MPRM that she worked for last summer. The next day, Caroline sent me all of the information on how to apply and called her former supervisor to let her know I would be submitting an application. Within one week I had a phone interview, and two weeks later I found out I was hired!

I have always been a strong believer in the fact that everything happens for a reason. If it were not for PRSSA, and if it were not for me bumping into Caroline while walking around the baseball field, I would not currently be writing this while laying out next to the pool in the middle of my apartment complex in Los Angeles. No matter how big your goals are, there is always a way to achieve them if you work hard enough.

The path to your dreams mostly likely will not be straight, but you’re already on you’re way, so don’t stop now. By becoming a member of PRSSA, you already have every resource you need to succeed within each of your fellow members, supervisor Ann Major, and connections through the chapter’s alumni, such as Caroline. Be sure to network with anyone and everyone around you with a smile, because you never know who can help you.

I hope you have a fantastic summer, and I can’t wait to see you all this fall. If you ever have any questions about interning, moving across the country or your favorite move or television show (I’m a huge TV junkie), do not hesitate to contact me!
