My Internship in the Big Apple

By: Alexa Turkovich
Hi all! I am so excited to be returning to Penn State’s Lawrence G. Foster Chapter of PRSSA this fall as the Director of Creative Development. For my summer update, I would like to share information about my internship this summer. I moved to New York City on June 3rd to NYU housing to start my summer 2018 journey.
I decided that to get the most out of my “summer going into senior year”, I would do a paid internship in the perspective city I want to work in after graduating. I work at TURNER PR, a full service fashion, lifestyle and travel agency. Here, I mostly work on the travel team and absolutely love how creative we get to be. Instead of trying to just pitch an article of clothing, we get to pitch an entire experience. Yes—that’s the whole nine yards—food & beverage, the hotel, the location. Here I learn how to create media lists using Cision, write pitch letters for top tier journalists and learn how to track media attention using the TrendKite Analytics program. Their office is located right in Times Square, and it only takes me ten minutes to get there from where I live on the subway, which is a super nice morning commute.
Overall I am having a great summer. I live with some of my best friends in a city that moves fast and has anything you could ever imagine at your fingertips. My advice to anyone who wants to get into New York City public relations is: you have to go after what you want, never be shy and arrive to your job five minutes early.
